Jazz Ensemble

Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned performing group that consists of approximately 20 student musicians. This is a year-long class with a variety of different styles of jazz music which will be rehearsed and performed by this group. These styles are blues, shuffle, ballad, samba, and rock. Students will play and improve upon improvisation through chordal changes and alternative forms, including rhythm changes, and blues form. Finally, the members of the jazz ensemble will prepare for performances, festivals, and contests. Typical jazz instruments accepted: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and vocal. Prerequisites: Teacher permission/Audition.

Music Theory

Music theory classes focus on the building blocks of music, such as rhythm, pitch, melody and harmony and how they all work together. Composition and analysis are also important parts of the course, as well as learning to sight read passages on staff paper.  This course expands upon the skills learned in band and choir as well as teaches new skills and is designed for students with a desire to continue the study of music beyond secondary school.

Concert Band

Concert Band is a performing group that consists of student musicians who enjoy playing wind and percussion instruments. Music of all styles and periods is rehearsed and performed by this group. Performances function as major class examinations and concert attendance is required. Many performances take place in the evening. Members function not only as a concert band, but also as the Marching Band and the Pep Band. Selected members make up the Jazz Band. Members of the Band have the opportunity to audition for All-State and All-Northwest Bands, participate in District Honor Band, and perform in Solo/Ensemble Festival and State Solo Contest. This class will help satisfy the academic humanities graduation requirement.

Wind Ensemble is an auditioned performing group that consists of 30-50 student musicians who enjoy playing wind and percussion instruments.  Music of all styles and periods is rehearsed and performed by this group.  Performances function as major class examinations and concert attendance is required. Percussion Ensemble

Skills taught in Percussion Ensemble include: proper tone production, blending sounds, intonation, rhythmic reading and understanding, articulation, phrasing, listening skills and correct stylistic interpretation of the given literature.

History of Rock & Roll

History of Rock is a course designed to familiarize the student with the history of Rock music. Prominent players and groups of each era will be covered, as well as sociological, economic and cultural factors that shaped the many styles of Rock music.
